David Torn, Tim Motzer, and Jeremy Carlstedt are at the centre, sensitive to the myriad shifts in attention and focus, they become the medium through which a different world seeps into ours.
To play this music, to listen to this music, is to step into a unique time and place. It unlocks a door and opens out upon an experience that is bespoke and particular to each individual. It will not be heard or felt in the same way twice.
As the three musicians begin to play clock time and all of the everyday clutter of what’s about us and what we carry dissipates, dissolves, dilates, to become something it was not before.
The distinction of who follows or who leads is both moot and mute as three individuals bond to become one. With no words spoken or plans prepared, music materialises, a cautious, delicate process of arrival that is fragile but strong enough to create its own atmosphere.
For player and listener alike there is a crackle of anticipation that flutters within, sparking like a lit fuse, that feeling you get when you know that the music will be allowed to go anywhere it needs to go, without judgment.
In the ritual of the concert, all three musicians engage with a heightened awareness, sharp, alert to the music of possibilities wherein they simultaneously converge and commune with both the periphery and the centre.
We are all now passengers on a mercurial journey traversing the electric thrum wherein notes snap, collage, and spin through halos of cymbal and the fertile contours and furrows of drums.
Collectively, Torn, Motzer, and Carlstedt create a cinema of the interior in which the attentive listener is enclosed. Narratives twist back in on themselves in an instant, spiking into unseen spaces. Their soundtrack is as loud as mountain thunder, as quick as a precious thought through thin air.
In the flux of their immediate chemistry, they ascend crescendos and dive deep into space, their bright harmonies scurrying towards silence, receding points left to dimly smoulder in the haze, a memory of stars.
And in the aftermath of it all, of these three short pieces, we are changed. We have returned from somewhere we've not ever been to before. How do you classify this experience? How do you classify this music? Jazz? Free improvisation? Spontaneous composition? Perhaps just call it what it is: honest music straight out of the air, straight from the heart.

Something of a meditative flow that feels more important than whatever he is playing at a given moment. Occasional monolithic phrases and delicate shaping of feedback sculpt time. errantzephyr

Another stellar release from this long-lived ensemble. Though the King Crimson influence is obvious & that comparison unavoidable, these guys have made many great recordings that can't be categorized as 'mere copies'. The perfect balance of aggressive riffing and serene soundscapes. Stephen Roberts

An amazing follow-up to Fractal Guitar. I came across Fractal Guitar as a fan of Markus Reuter, and after downloading that had to go ahead and download all the other music Stephan has on Bandcamp. Love this stuff... crimlarks
